You are certainly not alone. Here are some well-proven tips that are worth giving a try when experiencing a tough time:
Try your best to attend to your fundamental human needs – Breathing, Eating, Sleeping, Physical Activity
Notable differences in diet, sleep quality, amount of physical activity, and breathing patterns are common when dealing with depression. These elements are very important to emphasize as they can directly impact your mood. Practices such as meditating, taking walks, stretching/yoga, following proper sleep hygiene (and/or overall hygiene), staying hydrated, and eating healthily have a positive influence on your well-being.
Journaling
There are various methods of journaling that are beneficial for alleviating depression when practiced consistently. For instance, some people write in their journals to remind themselves what they are grateful for, while others may use their journal break down/challenge their thoughts and emotions.
Engaging and connecting with people and activities that you truly enjoy
It is very common to self-isolate when depressed, which often leads to a deeper depressive episode. Therefore, getting out of your head and getting some fresh air is important! Perhaps spend time with friends and family that truly bring you joy. Also, make time for hobbies or relaxation that you enjoy, such as recreational activities, watching a funny movie, or listening to your favorite music.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Your are also encouraged to try cognitive behavioral therapy. Your therapist can offer professional attention and guidance to help you with specific, personalized coping skills. Depression is already hard enough, so at least be kind to yourself while coping. Sometimes, finding the willpower to attempt these coping skills can even be challenging when feeling depressed and helpless, so be patient with yourself throughout the process.
